Snot have seen several vocalists step up to the mic over the years, but Andy Knapp’s arrival in 2024 has arguably had the biggest impact yet. Pulled from his local scene and thrust into the role once held by Lynn Strait (as well as Tommy Vext), Knapp has quickly earned the respect of longtime fans who see him as a natural fit for the job.
In a recent conversation with AudioEclectica.com, Knapp spoke about what getting the call from Snot meant to him — particularly given how deeply they influenced his earliest years in music:
“This whole thing, I still don’t have the right words to express what it means to me and what this band means to me and what Lynn Strait was to me growing up, wanting to play music.”
Knapp went on to describe his evolution as a young music fan in Southern California — one who came into heavy music through hip-hop, then grunge, and eventually through genre-smashing acts like Rage Against The Machine:
“I kind of dabbled in everything, but I think, the high school years and all that stuff, I was more of a hip-hop kid than I was punk rock… That’s when Nirvana hit, and that just fucking changed the whole game… And then — boom — Rage Against The Machine comes out and just kind of puts it all together…”
Discovering heavier, bass-driven sounds led him toward early nü-metal’s breakout wave:
“And then that’s when Korn came out and it was bumping, so it was, like, ‘Oh, shit, this music hits hard.’ And it had that kind of hip-hop feel. It was just all kind of a progression.”
Eventually, Knapp realized he was exactly who the scene was speaking to:
“I was the prime audience for nü-metal, man. All those bands — Linkin Park, Deftones, Papa Roach, any of those bands. And then Snot was just the band that kind of just stood off by itself.”
He remembers precisely where he was when he first heard Snot — and the moment Lynn Strait’s voice hooked him for life:
“My boy was, like, ‘Dude, you gotta check out this band.’ And he threw on Snot and the first song he played was ‘Snooze‘… And then when he came in with, ‘Well, here’s your motherfckin’ wake-up call,’ it was just, like, ‘Who the fck is this guy?’ And I just got wrapped into that record hard.”
That encounter didn’t just spark fandom — it pushed Knapp toward performing himself:
“If I’m gonna fcking sing, I’m gonna try to do it like that guy [Lynn] does it. ’Cause he doesn’t give a fck, and he’s just doing his own thing.”
And like so many in the late-90s scene, he found Strait’s style deeply relatable — from his energy to his look:
“I tattooed my stomach like him, I pierced my eyebrow like him… I was just enthralled with this kid… I was just, like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna pierce my eyebrow. I’m gonna bleach my hair.’ It wasn’t an obsession… I just thought he was f*cking cool.”
Snot have already begun working on new material with Knapp behind the mic, and he confirmed that he also has a new album coming from his other band, Stronger Than Machines, expected either later this year or early next.
