A bizarre situation appears to be unfolding overseas for Canadian progressive psych rock outfit Angine De Poitrine, as a reportedly unauthorized version of the band has allegedly been performing live in Russia while presenting itself as the real group.
According to Exclaim!, the imitation act has been appearing on stage in costumes similar to those worn by the actual band and has even been tagging the real group’s social media accounts without clearly identifying itself as a tribute or cover act.
Sam Murdock, an art director associated with Angine De Poitrine, addressed the situation while speaking with the publication.
“There’s a fake [version of the] band touring Russia already, with the costumes and everything, and they keep tagging the band and they don’t even say it’s not a real band. And they just have a one-neck guitar.”
The claim has raised eyebrows among fans, especially given the visual identity that has helped the band stand out during its breakout run. Known for their colorful polka-dot stage attire and distinctive microtonal approach to progressive psychedelic rock, Angine De Poitrine have built a reputation around a presentation that is difficult to mistake for many other acts.
However, footage circulating online reportedly shows a group attempting to recreate that aesthetic while lacking several key elements associated with the real band. Among the most noticeable differences are the absence of the band’s signature double-neck guitar setup, a less elaborate stage production, and performances that fans have pointed out don’t quite match the musicianship of the genuine article.
The reported impostor act has allegedly performed at least one show in Moscow, though it remains unclear whether additional dates have taken place elsewhere in Russia.
Meanwhile, the real Angine De Poitrine continue to tour extensively in support of their latest album, ‘Vol. II’, which arrived this past April. The band remains active across North America throughout the summer and fall, with additional dates scheduled across Europe and the United Kingdom.
The unusual situation serves as a reminder of one of the stranger challenges that can come with rapid success: sometimes the copycats arrive sooner than expected.
