Melodic Swedish death metal legends At The Gates have opened up about the creation of their upcoming final album, ‘The Ghost Of A Future Dead’, paying tribute to their late vocalist Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg, who passed away last September after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma.
In a heartfelt social media post on March 17th, the band shared photos and reflections from the studio sessions, offering insight into the making of what will now serve as Lindberg’s final recorded work.
“In February 2024 we entered Fascination Street Studios with producer Jens Bogren where we recorded all the music between February and March… We had the album pretty much written by mid December 2023, when Tomas got the bad news. We decided together with him that we probably should move ahead and record the music in February/March as planned and then record the vocals later in 2024. As this plan never materialized, we went back to check the demo vocals he had been recording prior to the studio recording with Per Stålberg… We were all very surprised by how good these takes were, especially Tomas himself… Tomas, we miss your smile, your warmth, your creativity, your compassion & your humor. You inspired us in everything… The world will never be the same. You are forever missed. This album is for you.”
The post detailed how the band involved Lindberg throughout the recording process, sending him daily updates after his surgery to keep him engaged. Highlights from the album include an intro on “The Fever Mask” by Charlie Storm and guest vocals from Fredrik Wallenberg on “Det Oerhörda.” The track order and cover artwork were completed with Lindberg’s collaboration prior to his passing.
‘The Ghost Of A Future Dead’ is set for release on April 24th, following the band’s debut of the single “The Fever Mask” last month. The album stands as a deeply personal farewell from At The Gates to their late frontman, celebrating his immense influence on the band and the broader metal community.
