Behemoth vocalist/guitarist Adam “Nergal” Darski has never shied away from provocation, so the announcement of the Polish blackened death metal institution’s thirteenth studio album, ‘The Sh*t Ov God’, landed exactly as intended — polarizing, confrontational, and instantly debated.
In a recent interview with Heavy, Nergal pushed back against criticism of the album’s name, arguing that the title isn’t a throwaway attempt at shock value, but a concept tied directly to the themes and philosophy running through the record.
“Some people get it, some people don’t,” Nergal explained. “When I gave our latest record that title, people said, ‘You can do better than this.’ No — this is the best I can give you. It’s not just a primitive slogan or a provocative phrase. It’s something much more than that.”
According to Nergal, the title only reveals its intent when paired with the lyrics and overall context of the album.
“Just get the record, read the lyrics. It’s not a stupid title,” he continued. “You need to make an effort as a fan to digest it and understand it. I did my work — now it’s up to you.”
He also emphasized that the album isn’t rooted in shallow anti-religious messaging.
“It’s not some Satanic chit-chat,” Nergal added. “It’s a very demanding, very challenging record. People might assume there’s something wrong with us for choosing a title like that, but it’s far more philosophical than they think.”
Reflecting on Behemoth’s recent discography, Nergal pointed out that contrast and disruption have long guided his creative decisions. From ‘The Satanist’ to ‘I Loved You At Your Darkest’, followed by ‘Opvs Contra Natvram’, each release intentionally shifted tone and presentation.
“You can’t top ‘The Satanist.’ You’ll fail if you try,” he said. “So instead, you do something completely different — something that knocks people off guard. That’s what this title does.”
Ultimately, Nergal admitted that confusion is part of the mission.
“I’m not doing this to make people like it,” he concluded. “I’m doing it to confuse the fuck out of them — and I succeeded.”
Whether embraced or rejected, ‘The Sh*t Ov God’ appears to be doing exactly what Behemoth intended: forcing a reaction and challenging expectations.
