Black Coast Share Emotional “Drown Out” Music Video

British nü-grunge outfit Black Coast are now streaming the music video for their latest single “Drown Out.” The visual for the emotionally charged track was directed by Luis Lopes.

“Drown Out” arrives as a deeply personal ballad for the band, tackling the difficult subject of living with an eating disorder and the mental strain that often accompanies it. Speaking about the song, the band explained:

“‘Drown Out’ is an intimate reflection on grappling with an eating disorder, and the inner daily struggle of trying to hold everything together for those around us while we fight these relentless thoughts and anxiety.

The song wears our hearts on its sleeve; exploring the attempt of drowning out the mental noise, and longing for peace in the midst of inner chaos.”

Guitarist Scott Pinnington revealed that the track was inspired by his own lifelong struggle with an eating disorder, which reached a breaking point last year.

According to Pinnington, he initially wrote the music before sharing the personal context behind it with vocalist Charlie Simpson.

“I wrote this song musically and I explained to our singer Charlie about how I was feeling at the time. I’ve suffered with an eating disorder all my life, and last year I hit rock bottom with it. I didn’t want to be here anymore, and felt like I was losing my life being succumbed by the anxiety and depression of living with it.

Drowning out the white noise and being in a different state of mind was what I constantly tried to do… to take myself out of my mind. I hope that this song resonates with those who may find themselves either in similar shoes, or understand that state of mind or being, and understand they’re not alone.”

With its vulnerable themes and atmospheric delivery, “Drown Out” highlights another emotional side of Black Coast, blending their grunge and alternative metal influences with a powerful message about mental health.
