Black Label Society‘s latest album, Engines Of Demolition, is leaning into the growing trend of limited-time digital bonus tracks. The digital deluxe edition of the record features two additional songs, “Broken Pieces (Unblackened)” and “Back To Me (Unblackened)”, available for pre-order now but only until 12:00am Thursday, March 26th. The album itself drops the following day, March 27th.
In addition, fans who opt for physical formats aren’t left empty-handed. A pair of exclusive tracks, “Name In Blood (Unblackened)” and “Lord Humungus (Unblackened)”, are included on a bonus 7” accompanying limited edition vinyl copies of the album.
This strategy reflects a wider industry trend where digital bonuses are used to drive early purchases and first-week chart performance. While it’s effective for chart positioning — since ten permanent track downloads equate to one album unit — some fans of physical formats feel shortchanged, particularly when they pay premium prices for vinyl only to see extra content limited to short-term digital releases.
Black Label Society’s approach follows similar moves from artists like Lamb Of God, whose “Wire” bonus track from Into Oblivion also received limited digital release. These tactics, while boosting streaming and download numbers, continue to spark debate among metal fans over fairness and format exclusivity.
