Breakkaway have officially joined the Epitaph Records roster, marking a major milestone for the rising NYC-based collective. Alongside the announcement, the band have unveiled their new single “Portrait Set On Fire,” their first release through the influential label.
Produced by the band alongside George Lever and Nathan Smart, “Portrait Set On Fire” continues the momentum built by earlier singles “I’ll See You When The Night Comes,” “Outside,” and “Secret.” The track arrives with an accompanying visual directed by Josh Ang and Wetmochii, further expanding the group’s evolving artistic identity.
Formed in 2022, Breakkaway brings together musicians Jessica Li, Case Fadell, Romain Dammann, Jorge Gonzalez Diez Gutierrez, Toji Kimura, and Ethan Chan — a lineup representing China, Mexico, France, and the United States. Now based in New York City, the collective has quickly carved out a distinct space through a genre-fluid sound that blends elements of hyperpop, indie folk, and nu-metalcore.
Their creative approach extends beyond music, drawing inspiration from literature, film, and fashion while exploring introspective and existential themes. The band’s storytelling balances deeply personal perspectives with broader universal ideas, reflecting the multicultural background that defines their identity.
With their Epitaph debut now underway, Breakkaway appear poised to expand their reach as one of the more stylistically unpredictable emerging acts in heavy alternative music.
