Cancer Christ Vocalist Anthony Mehlhaff Pleads Not Guilty In Ongoing Yosemite Rampage Case

Cancer Christ frontman Anthony Mehlhaff has formally entered a not guilty plea in connection with a series of disturbing incidents that unfolded around Yosemite National Park in August 2024. Mehlhaff has remained in custody since his arrest, as prosecutors move forward with multiple felony charges tied to what authorities have described as a prolonged and erratic crime spree.

According to court records and reporting from the Mariposa Gazette, Mehlhaff is currently facing ten felony counts, including kidnapping, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, theft, and vandalism. Several additional charges — including battery on a police officer — were later reduced to misdemeanors in an amended complaint filed on November 10th.

The alleged chain of events reportedly began at a restaurant near Yosemite National Park, where Mehlhaff is accused of harassing staff, stealing drinks, and assaulting an employee before leaving the premises. Authorities claim he later entered the park itself, where he allegedly stole a bicycle, threatened lodge employees with a knife, stripped to his underwear, attempted to kidnap a store manager, and stole the manager’s vehicle.

The situation escalated further when Mehlhaff allegedly rammed another vehicle and crashed while attempting to evade law enforcement. After being taken into custody, he is also accused of assaulting deputies during a subsequent hospital evaluation.

The Mariposa Gazette further reports that Mehlhaff has cycled through multiple public defenders, dismissing several while others declined to represent him. Interviews conducted by the publication with Mehlhaff’s ex-wife and a Cancer Christ bandmate describe a rapid personal and mental decline in the months leading up to the incident. Both cited a sudden turn to psilocybin use and heavy THC consumption, which they claim coincided with increasingly manic and uncharacteristic behavior.

Medical evaluations conducted since Mehlhaff’s incarceration have reportedly resulted in diagnoses of bipolar disorder, complex trauma, and substance use disorders related to cannabis and hallucinogens. Psychiatrists involved in the case have suggested that substance abuse likely played a significant role in triggering the August 2024 rampage. Despite these findings, Mehlhaff has allegedly refused antipsychotic medication while in custody.

Mehlhaff’s legal team is expected to pursue a mental health diversion request, which could allow the charges to be dismissed if he successfully completes a court-approved treatment program. However, the Mariposa County District Attorney has indicated he intends to oppose the motion, suggesting the case will remain highly contested as it proceeds through the legal system.
