Dutch symphonic black metal duo Carach Angren are set to release their new EP, The Cult Of Kariba, on October 17th via Season Of Mist. This effort expands on the legend of the White Lady from Schinveld, first introduced on the band’s 2008 debut album Lammendam.
The EP’s first track, “Ik Kom Uit Het Graf”, is the band’s first composition entirely in Dutch. According to a press release, the song “follows a man who was poisoned by Kariba, only to be summoned centuries later by an errant cult ritual. What unfolds is so sinister, it could only be composed by these evil masterminds of symphonic black metal.”
A press release further explained the EP’s narrative:
“…With The Cult Of Kariba, Carach Angren reconnect with their original concept while expanding its narrative universe. The EP draws inspiration from archival poems and lesser-known local legends, particularly the figure of Kariba: a mysterious woman remembered as both a poisoner and a sorceress.
The songs unfold as a sequence of events involving an underground cult in Schinveld. It begins with ‘A Malevolent Force Stirs’, where villagers secretly gather for a ritual. ‘Draw Blood’ depicts the first act of violence and sacrifice. ‘The Resurrection Of Kariba’ details both the ceremony to awaken her and the tragic backstory of her grief and execution. With ‘Ik Kom Uit Het Graf’, the victim of her past betrayal returns from the grave seeking violent revenge. The EP closes with ‘Venomous 1666’, where Kariba’s spirit is fully reborn, consuming the living and sealing the fate of those who called her back.”
