Austrian deathcore outfit Castiel have unveiled the latest chapter in their ongoing conceptual EP campaign with the release of the new single and music video, “Act II: A Festering Wound.”
The track arrived online on May 21st alongside a new visual directed once again by Daniel Franklin, who previously helmed the video for the band’s earlier single, “Act I: Defile // Denounce.” Both songs will appear on Castiel’s upcoming four-act EP, All Returns To Hollow And Silence, due out July 24th through Seek & Strike.
The band explained that “Act II: A Festering Wound” explores the emotional collapse of a relationship and the painful feeling of watching someone mentally drift away.
“‘Act II’ focuses heavily on the gradual loss of a person within a relationship. The lyrics describe emotional distance, a sense of speechlessness, and the feeling of watching someone mentally disappear even though they are still physically present.”
According to the group, the song’s progression mirrors its emotional weight, beginning with a more restrained atmosphere before shifting into increasingly aggressive territory.
“The song itself is still somewhat calm in the first half and then becomes faster and more aggressive with the breakdown. This is also shown very well in the video with effects.”
The accompanying visual leans into a darker aesthetic, featuring black makeup, stylized effects and “black blood” imagery to reinforce the song’s bleak tone. The band also incorporated a forest setting to contrast themes of emotional decay with traditionally peaceful surroundings.
“The video itself also has a darker colour palette. We wore black makeup and used ‘black blood’ pills to visually illustrate just how dark this song is. In the video, you see two actors who helped us bring the lyrics to life visually. The setting is a forest, which is usually associated with tranquility; we wanted to use that very contrast to frame the scene.”
With two installments now released, Castiel continue building anticipation for All Returns To Hollow And Silence ahead of its summer release.
