Cemetery Skyline Unveil Gothic Metal Rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “I Drove All Night”

Cemetery Skyline have put their own darkened twist on Cyndi Lauper’s version of Roy Orbison’s classic track, “I Drove All Night”. The gothic metal supergroup’s keyboardist, Santeri Kallio, shared insight into their choice to reimagine the song:

“We were in the middle of writing songs for Nordic Gothic, sending tracks back and forth over the Baltic Sea, when Markus suddenly came up with the idea to cover the ‘80s classic “I Drove All Night”. Some may consider it a Roy Orbison hit, but back in high school, I used to bang my head against the wall to Cyndi Lauper’s version.

As a longtime fan, I couldn’t resist the idea. The rest of the band quickly got on board, eager to give this classic a darker edge. I also like to think Markus’ passion for vintage cars played a role—after all, the song is about manically driving through the night. We basically swapped the Cadillac for a hearse, and everything fell into place.”

While the studio version is just now surfacing, Cemetery Skyline have already incorporated their bleaker take into their live setlists on multiple occasions.
