CHEVELLE’s Pete & Sam Loeffler Reveal They Haven’t Spoken To Their Brother Joe In 20 Years

In a recent appearance on ‘The Garza Podcast’, hosted by Chris Garza (Suicide Silence), CHEVELLE frontman Pete Loeffler and drummer Sam Loeffler opened up about the band’s split from their younger brother Joe Loeffler, who played bass during the band’s first decade.

Discussing the 2005 decision, Pete explained:

“There’s a certain amount of turmoil and a certain amount of poking you can do at each other. And if you can’t work through those times and become closer, you’re not gonna last… It didn’t work with our other brother. It couldn’t get very far.”

Sam added:

“He was not open to anything, any bit of criticism, even just development. It was, ‘Hey, man, that’s a little flat. We’ve gotta do that again.’ ‘No, I’m not.’ This doesn’t have to be an argument. Let’s just do it till it’s right. And then the fucking shit hits the fan, and then it’s, like, ‘Oh my God, what’s happening?’”

According to Pete, the tension became too much to manage:

“Every other week he was quitting the band. The fourth time we just said, ‘No, it’s done.’ We started out as three brothers, but we couldn’t do it for very long.”

The brothers revealed that they haven’t spoken to Joe since 2005. Pete even joked:

“We should have a cake tonight and celebrate because our lives have been that much better.”

When Garza noted how complicated their family situation must be with seven siblings, Sam said:

“We get along with everybody for the most part.”

Pete added:

“Other than one. That’s not bad, right? Six of us get along out of seven.”

Back in July 2005, Chevelle officially confirmed Joe’s departure, citing “irreconcilable differences.” A week earlier, Joe publicly claimed, “I was fired, plain and simple; in fact, there wasn’t even a discussion about it — they just dropped it on me.”

Chevelle’s latest album, Bright As Blasphemy, arrived on August 15th via Alchemy Recordings, marking their first release since 2021’s Niratias. The band recently wrapped up a 38-city summer tour alongside Asking Alexandria and Dead Poet Society.

Over their career, the Chicago rockers have racked up nearly half a billion streams, seven No. 1 hits, and multiple platinum certifications, solidifying their place as one of hard rock’s most enduring acts.
