Artists from across the worlds of rock, punk, hip-hop, comedy and spoken word have come together for a new benefit compilation addressing immigration enforcement in the United States. Titled ‘Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT,’ the 47-track collection is being organized by Build Art Make Change (BAMC) and will arrive October 2nd through SoundsGood Records.
The compilation features previously unreleased material from more than 30 artists, including Tom Morello, Ad-Rock of Beastie Boys, Fishbone, Jello Biafra, Kathleen Hanna, Ozomatli, Money Mark, David J of Bauhaus/Love and Rockets, Fred Armisen and many others.
An album release event is also planned for October 3rd at La Cita in Los Angeles, California. Tickets will go on sale Friday, August 14th at 10:00 a.m. local time through contra-ice.com.
Among the featured material is a new interpretation of DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You,” performed by Kathleen Hanna alongside Ad-Rock, Money Mark, Fredo Ortiz and Frank Figueroa. Mario Caldato Jr. of Beastie Boys produced the recording.
Hanna said of the collaboration:
“It’s not often you get to play music with your favorite people while working with a grassroots organization like Contra-ICE. They are passionately fighting against fascism and white supremacy, which is something none of us can afford to ignore.”
The compilation was curated by BAMC founder Dali Colorado, who described the project as an effort to use music and other forms of creative expression to support immigrant rights and organizations working directly with affected communities.
“Contra-ICE is not only an album. It is not only a collective. It is a cultural infrastructure built to support frontline organizations, amplify immigrant voices, and mobilize creatives who believe that love is not passive; it’s organized.”
Lalo Alcaraz, the project’s artistic director and a prominent cartoonist, likewise emphasized the role of art in responding to political and social issues.
“Artists, musicians, performers, and decent people from all walks of life are pushing back against the authoritarianism we are feeling in our own country. Contra-ICE is one expression of that.”
Proceeds from the compilation will benefit organizations including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and Unión del Barrio, with the funds intended to support their work surrounding labor rights and community protection.
The collection will be available digitally and on CD, while limited vinyl editions are also planned. A special vinyl edition accompanied by a signed print from Alcaraz and other compilation contributors will also be made available.
