After decades of silence in the studio, legendary California thrashers Dark Angel have officially returned. The band has unveiled details for their long-awaited fifth studio album, Extinction-Level Event — their first new full-length release since 1991’s Time Does Not Heal.
Produced by Rob Shallcross and mixed by Mike Fraser, the album marks a major milestone for the band and includes contributions from late guitarist Jim Durkin, who passed away in early 2023 after a battle with liver disease. The title track, “Extinction-Level Event”, serves as the album’s lead single and features riffs originally written by Durkin himself.
Drummer Gene Hoglan spoke about the track’s legacy and power:
“Jim Durkin left us with this badass tune. It is so Dark Angel and I’m just so excited about it. We made it the lead-off song on the record, not as a tribute to Jim or because of sentimental reasons – like, here is the song that Jim left us – but because it’s just a totally killer song. He wrote it ten years ago, and by today’s standards it’s still ball-crushing.”
He also shared his thoughts on the album as a whole:
“Musically, lyrically, and vocally, I’m so stoked about this album. I’m really excited about Dark Angel right now, and everyone who’s heard the new album is losing their minds.”
Extinction-Level Event will officially usher in a new era for Dark Angel, giving longtime fans a long-awaited dose of fresh chaos while honoring the legacy of one of thrash’s unsung innovators.
