Disturbed frontman David Draiman has spoken out against what he views as a glaring omission during the 68th annual GRAMMY Awards, criticizing the lack of public support shown for Iranian protestors during the ceremony.
Draiman shared a video statement on social media on February 2, expressing disappointment that no artists or presenters used their platform at music’s biggest night to address the ongoing unrest in Iran. The awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles, CA.
While Draiman has remained a polarizing figure in recent years due to his outspoken support of Israel amid the war in Gaza, his latest comments focused squarely on Iran, where widespread protests have intensified in recent months. Demonstrations have erupted in opposition to the Islamic Republic government, citing political repression, human rights violations, and worsening economic conditions.
Reports indicate that tens of thousands of protestors have been killed during government crackdowns, with allegations of military violence, internet blackouts, and state-led coverups continuing to draw international concern. Despite this, Draiman argued that the situation was entirely absent from the GRAMMYs’ many on-stage speeches.
Speaking in the video, Draiman said:
“I was disappointed, to say the least, after watching the GRAMMY Awards last night — and there were many great moments and many great performances.
I was disappointed that not a single person decided to say anything about what’s happening in Iran, about the Iran massacre. About the fact that tens of thousands of innocent people have been slaughtered, shot after their protests in hospital beds, hunted down, mercilessly, repressed.
You are supposed to be against repression. You are supposed to be for freedom. You are supposed to be for human rights, right? Well, the Iranian people deserve your compassion. They deserve your concern. They deserve your focus — and you gave them none of it.”
Draiman clarified that his criticism was not aimed at dismissing other causes raised during the broadcast, but rather questioning why Iran was excluded entirely from the conversation.
“Everyone’s entitled to a voice. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion. But why wasn’t there a single voice on behalf of the Iranian people?
Well, they wouldn’t speak for you. I will.
