Dennis Pepa, a co-founding member of thrash metal veterans Death Angel, has revealed that he is currently battling stage 4 duodenal cancer, with a crowdfunding campaign now underway to help cover treatment and expenses for his family.
Pepa was a member of Death Angel from 1982 through 1991 before returning to the band for a second stint between 2001 and 2008. During his time with the group, he handled bass and backing vocals and also briefly served as the band’s lead vocalist between 1982 and 1984.
According to Pepa, he was diagnosed with stage 4 duodenal cancer in February 2026. He had also lost his job of nearly 20 years, leaving him and his family facing the financial burden of cancer treatment alongside their everyday expenses.
Pepa has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $150,000. The funds are intended to help him pursue treatment at the Immunocine Cancer Center in Mexico, as well as cover travel, accommodation and household expenses while he undergoes treatment.
In his fundraising message, Pepa explained why he has decided to publicly ask for help during what he described as an extremely difficult period.
“In February 2026, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Duodenal Cancer. I’d already lost my job of almost 20 years. Suddenly, my family and I had to find money for cancer treatment while trying to keep up with the everyday bills.”
Pepa said he has been researching treatment options at the Mexican cancer center, including dendritic cell immunotherapy, and hopes the fundraising campaign will allow him to pursue the treatment if he is approved.
The $150,000 goal would also help cover the costs of getting to Mexico, staying there for approximately six weeks and supporting his family while he is away.
“I don’t need anything extravagant. I just need to be able to get there, have a roof over my head for those 6 weeks, and know my family can keep things afloat back home.”
Pepa also opened up about what is motivating him to continue fighting, pointing to his two sons, Maddox and Roman, as well as his fiancé, Gemalyn, and the future he hopes to share with his family.
“I want to carry on watching my sons Maddox (22) and Roman (19) grow and build lives of their own. And I want to be beside them, helping them to continue becoming strong, compassionate men. I want to marry my fiancé, Gemalyn, and continue being present for the people I love most.”
Death Angel have also called on the metal community to support their longtime friend and founding member.
“Please help our brother, friend, cousin, and founding member of Death Angel, Dennis Pepa, in his fight against cancer.”
The band continued by emphasizing Pepa’s role in the group’s history and asking fans to come together in support of him during his battle.
“Any little bit helps more than you know, including your positive energy, thoughts, and prayers.”
The campaign is currently seeking donations toward Pepa’s $150,000 goal, with contributions intended to assist with treatment, travel, accommodation and family expenses.
