It’s looking more and more likely that Deftones will release their long-awaited tenth studio album before the summer is over.
The Sacramento alt-metal icons began recording the follow-up to Ohms back in early 2024 with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters), with frontman Chino Moreno handling vocals later that spring. Since then, updates have been minimal—until now.
During their June 29th headline set at Crystal Palace Park in London, the band teased something called ‘Private Music’, flashing a date written in Roman numerals: X.VII.MMXXV, which fans believe points to July 10th, 2025. The visual also stated the music would be “distributed by Deftones,” suggesting a possible label shift away from Reprise/Warner.

Adding fuel to the speculation, Stephen Carpenter appeared on a newly livestreamed episode of ‘The Dr. Greenthumb Show’ hosted by Son Doobie (Funkdoobiest), alongside special guest Everlast (House of Pain). During the chat, Everlast revealed he had heard new Deftones music and confirmed a planned August release, stating (as transcribed by theprp.com):
“Since we’re going to be on this kind of, you know, throwing flowers around attitude, this man [points to Carpenter] has a record coming out much sooner, in August, that I just heard a few songs from. [It] sounds like Deftones all got in time machines and got back out and hit the studio last week and are feeling young and beautiful.
That record is amazing, man, all three [songs] that I heard… It’s gonna be a good musical summer for people who like what we do. Or summer for them; for you and me, probably end of the year.”
Carpenter didn’t confirm or deny the release timing but did mention he’ll be back on the road with Deftones in August:
“We’re actually going back out — well, they’re out right now in Europe — I join back up with the band in August, and we’re doing Canada/U.S. mix.”
Son Doobie chimed in with additional praise:
“The music you played Steph, Strong One [one of Carpenter‘s nicknames] is always treating us to what he’s got going. And, man, those songs are amazing. And, like I said, man, Chino sounds amazing… Just on it man, and sharp man. And yeah, man, your guys’ show is ridiculous, bro. It’s sickening… And then just to say again, you know, man, it’s just I can’t wait for you guys hear it, it’s so dope.”
Though no official announcement has been made, signs continue to point toward a major Deftones reveal in the coming weeks—with a full album possibly landing in August 2025.
