Down have released a new mini-documentary capturing their September 27th, 2024 performance at Inn Of The Mountain Gods Casino in Mescalero, NM. The show held extra significance for the NOLA sludge metal supergroup, as it was one of their first three live performances since 2022 and followed a postponement due to devastating wildfires.
Originally set to take place on June 20th, 2024, the concert was delayed when fast-moving wildfires threatened a tribal village in southern New Mexico, forcing thousands to evacuate. In response, Down performed two pop-up shows in Louisiana, donating a portion of the proceeds to the Mescalero Apache Nation – South Fork Fire relief fund.
When the rescheduled show finally took place in September, the band was honored in a special gifting ceremony. Blue Shendo, Tribal Administrator of the Apache Mescalero Tribe, alongside Councilwoman Euphrasia Platta and Miss Mescalero, presented Down with embroidered wool blankets as a gesture of appreciation for their support.
Reflecting on the experience, frontman Phil Anselmo shared:
“To play a show for the music/metal fans from Mescalero was an absolute honor — the beautiful presentation from the local Apache Tribe was humbling, surreal, and strong. I’d play there again in a heartbeat.”
Drummer Jimmy Bower echoed that sentiment:
“When we were invited to play the Inn Of The Mountain Gods, we knew from the start it would be special. Almost canceled due to wildfires, we played two shows in Louisiana to help raise funds for the locals in Mescalero. The show was rescheduled, and we flew out the next month. Before the show, we were presented with embroidered native wool blankets in appreciation for our donation, which was an absolute honor. The show was amazing. It was truly a special weekend.”
The newly released documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at this memorable night and the events leading up to it.
