Ben Jones, mastermind behind progressive rock project Orion, has publicly called out renowned artist Hugh Syme for allegedly selling the same artwork to two different clients. According to a social media post from Orion, the artwork Jones purchased from Syme for use in his upcoming August 2024 album, The Lightbringers, also appears in the booklet for Dream Theater’s newly released deluxe edition of Parasomnia.
Jones took to Facebook on February 7th to express his frustration, writing:
“Is this for real?! A piece of artwork in the new Dream Theater deluxe edition is the EXACT same piece of artwork that was in The Lightbringers booklet for the song The Ghosts Among Us.
I’m sure they won’t read this, but any thoughts from Mike Portnoy or John Petrucci? Hugh Syme did the artwork for my album and theirs, so I think I can see where this is going…”
While Syme has yet to issue a public response, Jones provided an update on February 9th, indicating that he had reached an agreement with Dream Theater’s management. He clarified that his issue was never with the band, but rather with Syme’s handling of the artwork’s exclusivity.
Jones further explained:
“I’m not sure why plagiarism is ever being mentioned, because I’ve certainly never said anything about that. In fact, I’ve written hundreds of responses to make people aware that DT are also victims of Hugh’s negligence.
Try to imagine a situation where you’ve spent thousands of dollars on artwork that was meant to be unique and tailored for your album. Now imagine that a fan sends you a photo, clearly showing that the exact piece of artwork (which was meant to be exclusive to you) has appeared in the biggest band in the genre’s new album art book. I can tell you, it’s utterly gut-wrenching.”
Jones went on to reveal that Dream Theater’s manager reached out to him on Saturday night, and the two had an amicable conversation. Despite having no obligation to do so, Dream Theater’s team extended a generous offer, which Jones expressed appreciation for.
At this time, it remains to be seen whether Syme will respond to the allegations, but it appears the matter between Orion and Dream Theater has been resolved.
