Eidola have shared a new music video for “Damballah,” giving fans another preview of the Salt Lake City post-hardcore band’s upcoming album, ‘The Will To Power’.
The record is set for release on November 20 through Periphery‘s 3DOT Recordings, with “Damballah” marking the latest look at the material.
Andrew Wells, who also performs with Dance Gavin Dance, co-directed the video alongside Mel Torres. Wells described the song as an exploration of transformation, destruction and the need to shed old identities in order to move forward.
“‘Damballah’ is about transformation through destruction. The idea that sometimes the only way forward is to shed the identity that brought you this far. The serpent itself is an ancient symbol of that cycle of creation and death, wisdom and temptation, shedding and becoming. There’s an acceptance in the song that nothing is meant to remain the same forever, and that evolution sometimes requires you to willingly let go of habits you’ve spent your entire life building.”
For ‘The Will To Power’, Eidola opted to return to a more organic writing process, working together in the same room to develop the material. Wells said that approach helped the band capture spontaneous moments while allowing him to explore a more vulnerable side of his songwriting.
“We were capturing these lightning-in-a-bottle moments. Working in-person was just so much fun. As a father now, my excitement and gratitude for what we do together had really increased. I was able to access more emotion and vulnerability than ever before. I tapped into those spaces to philosophize from my own perspective. As a result, ‘The Will to Power’ became the best representation of what our band is.”
The album is also partially influenced by the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche, particularly his views on power and its influence on the development of humanity.
