Elder were forced to take the stage without bassist Jack Donovan at their September 22nd show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR, after the musician was hospitalized with pneumonia.
Donovan had reportedly been battling illness for roughly a week while continuing to perform with the band on their ongoing fall North American tour. His condition ultimately worsened considerably following the group’s arrival in Portland, prompting him to seek medical attention.
According to a statement issued by Elder, doctors advised Donovan that his condition could have become life-threatening had he not gone to the hospital. He remained hospitalized overnight, though the band confirmed that his condition was stable and that he was receiving treatment.
The band explained the circumstances surrounding the Portland performance:
“IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING TONIGHT’S PORTLAND SHOW
Our bassist Jack has fallen seriously ill and has been hospitalized with pneumonia. After struggling the past week with illnesses and continuing to play, his condition took a turn for the much worse suddenly after arrival at Roseland Theater.
Doctors have advised him that had he not sought medical attention his condition could have become life threatening. He is currently hospitalized overnight.
We are so grateful that his condition is stable and he is getting treatment. With this extremely last minute development – literal minutes before doors – and with his blessing, we have decided the show must go on.
Tonight’s concert will doubtless be different but we hope for your understanding.”
The band’s fall North American run with Blackwater Holylight and Bask is currently scheduled to continue through October 3rd.
