Brady Ebert, co‑founder and former guitarist of Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, is now staring down a potential life sentence after being indicted on an upgraded charge of attempted first‑degree murder in connection with an alleged car attack on William Yates, the father of Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates.
Ebert was first arrested in late March after being accused of intentionally driving his car into 79‑year‑year‑old William Yates near the Yates family’s Maryland home, leaving the elder Yates hospitalized with serious lower‑body injuries, including a broken leg requiring surgery. Initially charged with second‑degree attempted murder and first‑degree assault, Ebert’s case escalated when a Montgomery County grand jury returned the new indictment on Thursday, April 30, according to The Baltimore Banner. That upgrade means, if convicted, Ebert could face not just decades but a life‑in‑prison exposure under Maryland law.
Court records and reporting indicate that surveillance footage shows Ebert repeatedly approaching the Yates residence in his vehicle, shouting and honking, before allegedly driving toward William Yates and striking him in the driveway. Police say Yates later told officers that Ebert returned to the scene and told him he “deserved it” before driving off again. Ebert has since claimed the incident was “pure self‑defense”, telling a court commissioner he was “straight‑up attacked” and pointing to video he believes will contradict the prosecution’s narrative; prosecutors have characterized his actions as a “clearly targeted attack.”
Ebert remains held without bond at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility and is next scheduled to appear in court on May 8 for a scheduling hearing. In the meantime, William Yates has been discharged from the hospital and is continuing his recovery at home; days before Turnstile’s recent Coachella 2026 set, he introduced the band via a video message, underscoring the contrast between the family’s current public appearances and the ongoing legal battle.
