Faith No More’s Billy Gould Addresses the Band’s Uncertain Future

The status of pioneering alternative metal legends Faith No More remains unclear—even within their own camp. Last October, keyboardist Roddy Bottum described the band as being on a “semi-permanent hiatus,” leaving fans of the influential outfit disheartened.

Faith No More initially reunited in 2009 after nearly 12 years apart, thrilling fans with a successful comeback that included their 2015 album, Sol Invictus. However, the pandemic years were a heavy blow to the group, forcing the cancellation of multiple shows.

As later revealed, frontman Mike Patton faced severe mental health struggles during this period, including a debilitating case of agoraphobia. Since then, Patton has pursued therapy and returned to the stage with his reactivated project, Mr. Bungle, but Faith No More’s future remains uncertain.

Some fans hoped that Bottum’s candid remarks might spark movement toward a reunion or at least a live comeback. However, bassist Billy Gould, when recently asked about the band’s status in an interview with Radio Futuro:

“I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. And you don’t have to believe me, but there’s nothing… Right now we’re in a really weird spot, a really strange spot, and I can’t really tell you what’s going on. I don’t know myself. I get different information from people, and I’m in the band, so…”

For his part, Billy Gould expressed that he’d love to see Faith No More back onstage. During the Radio Futuro interview, when it was suggested that he might be the one calling the shots in the band, Gould joked that if that were true, the group would already be performing live again.
