Ghost’s “Mary On A Cross” Reaches Platinum Status In The UK

Ghost have added another major milestone to their catalog, as the band’s breakout single ‘Mary On A Cross’ has officially been certified Platinum in the United Kingdom.

Originally released in 2019 on the band’s EP Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic, the song was presented as part of the Swedish occult rock outfit’s fictional 1960s-era canon. At the time, the track arrived with little fanfare and modest attention.

That changed dramatically years later when a fan-altered version — slowed down and drenched in reverb — exploded on TikTok, sending the song viral and introducing it to an entirely new audience. The resurgence propelled the track to unprecedented commercial success, earning Ghost their first-ever Platinum single in the United States in 2023.

Momentum continued to build in 2024. This past November, the song achieved 2x Multi-Platinum certification in the U.S., signifying two million units sold. Now, as of December 19, the track has crossed another major threshold, officially going Platinum in the UK, representing 600,000 units sold in that territory.

The UK certification marks a historic moment for the band, as ‘Mary On A Cross’ becomes Ghost’s first Platinum release in the country. The single previously went Silver in February 2024 and Gold in June 2024 before reaching its latest milestone.

Reflecting on the song’s unexpected journey, Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge previously referred to it as:

“The biggest song of my career.”

What began as a deep-cut curiosity has since transformed into one of the most unlikely modern rock success stories of the streaming era.
