At 69, horror punk icon Glenn Danzig is contemplating winding down his career as a legacy artist. From fronting The Misfits to achieving gold-certified success with his goth metal band Danzig, his influence on heavy music remains undeniable.
However, in recent years, his musical output has slowed considerably. His last studio album, Black Laden Crown, arrived in 2017, followed by the 2020 Elvis Presley tribute record, Danzig Sings Elvis. Touring has also become increasingly rare for Danzig, who in 2022 expressed disinterest in hitting the road extensively, stating:
“I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore. I’m just going to fly out to a show here or there. I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore.”
In a new interview with Full Metal Jackie, Danzig reiterated his reluctance toward full-scale touring, citing rising costs as a major factor:
“…Everything’s more expensive. The last time I went out — I think it was 2022 or 2023, again just a handful of shows — and prices on buses and gas had just gone [way up]. And then this last time we went out in 2023, they went up three times what we normally pay. And this time it’s even crazier. So, I think it’s also become really hard for a lot of bands to go out there and tour.”
When asked about new music, Danzig admitted that he hasn’t been working on anything, citing shifts in the industry:
“The whole music thing and recording and everything, it’s just changed dramatically where people really don’t buy physical product anymore. They just wanna download it for free online. So there’s really no incentive to new music, unless I’m in the studio and I do something and I wanna give it away for free to everybody. I don’t know if that’s a great business model.”
While he still enjoys writing, he remains uncertain about recording another Danzig album:
“I don’t see the music industry changing at all. So I don’t know if I’m ever gonna record again, at least Danzig stuff. Maybe at some point. I don’t know right now.”
Despite this, Danzig will be heading out for a rare run of live shows this March, joined by Down, Abbath, and Cro-Mags. The dates are as follows:
03/21 – Las Vegas, NV @ The Virgin Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas
03/22 – Lincoln, CA @ Thunder Valley Casino Resort
03/25 – Seattle, WA @ WAMU Theater
03/26 – Portland, OR @ Moda Center
03/29 – Los Angeles, CA @ Kia Forum
03/30 – Phoenix, AZ @ Arizona Financial Theatre
