Chuck Varga, the former GWAR vocalist best known for his Sexecutioner character, has passed away.
Varga was a co-founding member of GWAR and played an important role in shaping the band during its formative years. Beyond his work as a performer, he contributed to the group’s character designs, illustrations and overall visual evolution.
Varga had been battling cancer in recent months, prompting GWAR to organize a blood drive and charity auction earlier this year to help with his hospice care and related expenses. His most recent tenure with the band came to an end in 2017.
GWAR bassist/vocalist Casey “Beekcake The Mighty” Orr confirmed Varga’s passing on September 25th, sharing a tribute to his longtime friend and bandmate.
“Chuck Varga has left this earthly realm. He passed peacefully, his beloved wife Bambi holding his hand. He was one of a kind. As an artist, as a performer; as a scholar and a gentleman. I’m better for having known him and the world is lesser for his leaving. He is most likely being welcomed into Valhalla right now by Brockie and Smooty and all who went before. Raise your glass and tell his tales. Legends never die. Hail Varga! Hail Sexicutioner!”
Varga’s contributions remain an important part of GWAR’s history and the elaborate mythology that helped define the band’s identity over the years.
