Mathcore veterans Heavy Heavy Low Low appear to be facing turmoil once again, just months after the release of their fifth album Pain Olympics and a return to touring. Guitarist and vocalist Danny Rankin has publicly stated that the group is effectively finished, citing issues with bandmate and vocalist Robert Smith.
On Monday, January 26th, Rankin claimed the band was locked out of their official Instagram account, which Smith allegedly retained control over. According to Rankin, Smith used the account to continue selling merchandise through a personal Shopify store, keeping the proceeds for himself with plans to relocate to Florida. Rankin further asserted that Smith had left the band weeks prior but maintained access to the accounts to continue monetizing merch sales.
Rankin posted on Instagram Stories:
“True ending of HeavyHeavyLowLow:
Rob (Singer) locked us out of the IG and used it to sell out merch on a personal Shopify to make $ to move to Florida.
I mentioned that it sucks to post shirts every day with no intent for shows and he quit the band, blocked me for weeks, and still posted shirt for personal gain.
Its been a month and no one else in the band seems to give a shirt that hes making us look thirsty as fuck / low key stealing from us / ghosting one of the other members.
Mans throwing away the band and a 20 year relationship for a couple hundred dollars (current msrp on moving to Florida)”
Rankin also shared a cropped screenshot from a band group chat, which he says shows Smith replying to drummer Chris Fritter regarding the merchandise profits:
“I didn’t make enough money for that to matter to y’all.
I need to move.
I have Danny blocked so I’m leaving this convo too.
Do you know how much more stressful this make things for me? Jesus.”
Rankin noted that Smith doubled down on his stance in the conversation, leaving the rest of the band frustrated and financially impacted.
As of now, neither Heavy Heavy Low Low nor Robert Smith have issued a public statement regarding the allegations. The situation leaves the band’s future uncertain just months after their long-awaited reunion.
