Jacksonville, NC deathcore outfit I Am Mook have officially signed with Seek & Strike and dropped the music video for their new single, “Smoke Detector,” the lead track from their upcoming EP ‘Hollow Allegory’.
Reflecting on the milestone, the band said:
“It’s mind-blowing to us the heights we have reached through our hard efforts after being a band for just over a year now. Our chief songwriter, Todd Holbrook (guitarist), is constantly writing and always striving to make harder and harder hitting riffs with every release – the Hollow Allegory EP is no exception.
“We collaborated with producer Brace McKnight to bring about a heavier tone with a huge emphasis on low end in our guitars, bass and a snare drum where the ping is king. We are absolutely thrilled to be signed to such a reputable record label like Seek & Strike. This band has been knocked down continuously since its formation, but through persistence and consistency, we are finally reaching heights we thought would take us years to reach.”
The band described the new video as a direct reflection of the song’s theme of betrayal and fake friendships:
“The music video for ‘Smoke Detector,’ shot by Justin Oakley, was a vision that stemmed from the song’s lyrics. Ultimately, this is a song about friends who are back-stabbers and the fake brotherhood within the scene. The video emphasizes that heavily with the backstabber being tied to a chair and being mercilessly beaten. Even the song’s title is a direct call out to fakes in the scene. The song is heated, hateful and brutal.”
The shoot itself was no easy task, taking place outdoors on December 9 in freezing 28-degree weather:
“We shot this music video in the dark of night, deep in the woods, for over 5 hours. The ground was incredibly wet and muddy. In the end though, we would not have been able to get such incredible and steamy shots without the brutal cold. A lot of camaraderie and a lot of laughs were shared during the video shoot and we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Huge thanks to Justin Oakley for directing, shooting and editing the video and to Jay Price, who took pictures throughout the shoot.”
The band also teased the variety listeners can expect from the EP:
“We’re a band that likes to write about whatever we feel like writing about. We also ‘toe the line’ between humorous and serious. This EP has a song called ‘WGIA,’ which is about stereotypical ‘White Guy’ activities, and another called ‘Confabulated,’ which is about dementia. Holbrook’s mother tragically succumbed to the disease this past year. Writing a theme throughout an EP or album is not out of the question though, and we will likely attempt to do so at some point.”
For fans familiar with deathcore, I Am Mook’s sound is heavy, brutal, and unapologetic:
“If you are listening to us, the three words that come to mind are breakdowns, blast beats, and growls. Bands that we look up to are mostly from the MySpace era and influence our writing process are bands from this era such as Chelsea Grin, Suicide Silence and Whitechapel. Additional bands that aren’t from this time-frame include Psycho-Frame, Larcenia Roe, Heavy Hitter, Body Snatcher, Traitors, Immortal Disfigurement, 9 Dead, Signs Of The Swarm and Gutrectomy.”
I Am Mook concluded with gratitude for their growing fanbase:
“We are incredibly thankful to work for such a wonderful group of fans. Thank you for listening and now with Seek & Strike we are going to be able to bring you music more frequently. It’s on and thanks for the support.”
