Ex-Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Murder Trial Collapses, Retrial Scheduled For 2027

The murder trial surrounding disgraced former Ian Watkins vocalist Ian Watkins has come to an abrupt halt, with UK courts now planning to retry the case in early 2027.

Watkins, who was serving a lengthy prison sentence for child sex-related offenses, was fatally stabbed inside prison on October 11th, 2025. Two inmates — 25-year-old Rashid Gedel and 43-year-old Samuel Dodsworth — were later charged in connection with the killing.

According to prosecutors, Gedel allegedly entered Watkins’ prison cell and stabbed him multiple times in the head and neck. Authorities reportedly cited CCTV footage and witness testimony as part of the prosecution’s case. Prosecutors further alleged that Dodsworth later disposed of the weapon used in the attack after it was handed off to him.

Court proceedings earlier this month also heard allegations that Gedel made remarks toward Watkins while prison staff attempted to treat him following the stabbing. Gedel, who was already serving a life sentence for murder, allegedly claimed he targeted Watkins because of his hatred toward child sex offenders and because Watkins happened to be housed nearby after a recent cell transfer.

Dodsworth has denied involvement in the killing, maintaining that he had no prior knowledge of the attack and was simply caught up in the situation after allegedly being handed the weapon. Prosecutors, however, argued that he was aware of the assault beforehand.

Additional testimony presented during the proceedings suggested that Watkins had received threatening notes shortly before the attack. One reportedly accused him of informing on another inmate, while another allegedly demanded money under threat of violence.

The trial was expected to continue this month, but proceedings officially collapsed on May 22nd after Justice Hilliard dismissed the jury in Leeds Crown Court. Addressing those present, the judge reportedly stated:

“Very reluctantly, I’m going to discharge you and the case will have to be re-tried. That’s disappointing for you and for everyone.”

Reports from UK outlets indicate the decision stemmed from undisclosed legal complications, though specifics have not yet been publicly revealed. The case is now expected to return to court on February 8th, 2027.
