Ukrainian symphonic progressive metal band Ignea have announced their next studio album, Monumental, which is set for release on October 23rd through Napalm Records.
The nine-track effort was mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen (Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy) and finds the band exploring themes of nostalgia, unrealized futures, and the lingering impact of the past through both its music and visual identity.
Vocalist Helle Bohdanova explained that the record was heavily inspired by modernist architecture and the emotional weight attached to memories of places and eras that once promised a brighter tomorrow.
“Back in the 17th century, nostalgia was considered a deadly disease—and in many ways, it still is. It’s a universal feeling experienced by every human being, pulling us toward a past that felt gentler than it truly was, especially during the bitter moments of the present. Much of this album was inspired by modernist architecture — concrete giants built to signal progress and a brighter future, now slowly decaying. They’ve become a sort of memory box: Monuments to unrealized dreams, where the future that was once imagined never arrived, yet continues to echo through the ruins and bright mosaics.”
According to the band, Monumental blends technical metal riffing, industrial elements, cinematic atmosphere, and expansive melodic passages to reflect what they describe as “nostalgic rides” through memory and time. The album draws from retrofuturism, monumental architecture, industrial design, and urban decay, creating a thematic world centered on lost futures and the beauty hidden within forgotten spaces.
The opening track, “Darkness,” establishes the album’s emotional foundation with a mix of melancholic passages, soaring choruses, live choir arrangements, and blast beats. Elsewhere, “Dreams Of Lands Unseen” looks to the Cold War-era space race, while “Presence Of The Past” explores the experience of watching cities evolve, decay, and rebuild over time.
One of the album’s most aggressive moments arrives with “Prefab,” an industrial-leaning track featuring guest vocals from Andy LaPlegua of Combichrist. Another collaboration appears on “Harmony Manufactured,” which features Britta Görtz of Hiraes.
Other highlights include the emotional metal ballad “What Buildings Dream Of,” the retro-futuristic interlude “I Am In Hell,” and the doom-infused “Between No Longer And Not Yet,” which incorporates dark jazz influences and themes of memory and reflection. The album concludes with the orchestral closer “Nadir.”
Despite unveiling the full album details, Ignea have yet to release a lead single. Pre-orders for Monumental are available now.
