Ukrainian progressive metal outfit Ignea are bringing an industrial edge to their latest offering, teaming up with Andy LaPlegua of Combichrist for the new single “Prefab.”
The track is taken from the band’s upcoming album ‘Monumental’, which is scheduled for release on October 23 through Napalm Records. With LaPlegua contributing vocals, Ignea lean further into the industrial side of their sound while exploring the complicated relationship between nostalgia, identity and the remnants of a former political system.
Vocalist Helle Bohdanova says the song was inspired by the prefabricated apartment blocks that became widespread throughout socialist Europe. While those buildings were intended to provide housing for the masses, Bohdanova says they also came to represent conformity and the loss of individuality.
“‘Prefab’ reflects on the darker side of nostalgia — prefabricated socialist buildings, originally meant to give everyone a roof over their heads. But like many socialist ideals, the concept was flawed at its core: Uniform, industrial, stripping people of individuality and personal choice, making them feel like ants inside their own homes.”
For Ignea, the subject carries a particularly personal connection. As Ukrainians who grew up in a post-Soviet environment, the band experienced the physical remnants of that era firsthand, while also witnessing the complicated nostalgia that some people continue to associate with Soviet life and aesthetics.
That tension became part of the song’s visual identity as well. The “Prefab” video places the viewer inside a cramped, repetitive environment intended to resemble a typical Soviet apartment, with the setting remaining constant while the occupants change.
Bohdanova also revealed that LaPlegua was effectively in the band’s mind from the beginning of the song’s development.
“When we shaped the demo around ‘Prefab,’ we were basically hearing Andy’s vocals in the back of our minds, and we’re so glad he agreed to lend his voice. Having Combichrist as part of the industrial metal banger on our upcoming album — what could be more iconic?”
The band describes “Prefab” as a trip into what Bohdanova calls a “cementery for serial dreams,” offering another glimpse at the darker and more expansive territory explored across ‘Monumental’.
