Imminence are taking the world of their upcoming album ‘Axis Mundi’ to the big screen.
The Swedish metalcore outfit have announced a series of exclusive theatrical screenings for the film companion to their first album for Sumerian Records. The events will take place ahead of the album’s October 2 release and will offer fans an early look at the complete cinematic world surrounding the record.
U.S. screenings are scheduled for September 29, followed by screenings in the UK, Europe and Australia on October 1. The experience will combine the film with an early listen of ‘Axis Mundi’, including previously unheard music and visuals that have not yet been released.
The film serves as the conclusion to the medieval-inspired saga that Imminence have been building through the album’s previously released music videos. Tracks including “The Sword That Never Bends,” “False Light” and “If Not Now, When” have introduced the story’s immortal knight, whose journey ultimately leads toward the mythical Axis Mundi, described as a bridge between the worlds of life and death.
Along the way, the knight is pursued by the Shadow, an evil counterpart born from the same curse, while an unlikely hound companion joins him on his journey.
Beneath the film’s mythology, Imminence say the story explores the meaning of life, mortality and the choices people make with the limited time they have.
The theatrical experience will also include an exclusive 20-minute making-of feature following each screening, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the album, its mythology and the extensive visual production behind the film.
Guitarist Harald Barrett recalled how the idea for the project first came together:
“Someone told us: ‘You’re such a cinematic band, you should take it to the next step and make a movie.’ You can’t just say that to a band like Imminence.”
Barrett and vocalist Eddie Berg subsequently expanded the visual identity Imminence had developed through their artwork, music videos and live productions. Working alongside longtime visual collaborator and album artist Jakob Koc, the pair helped establish the world and mythology before scriptwriter Juan Felipe Zul and director Pavel Trebukhin brought the concept to the screen.
The film and album were developed simultaneously, with the two projects ultimately becoming interconnected parts of the same creative world.
Musically, ‘Axis Mundi’ continues Imminence’s blend of metalcore, orchestration and violin-driven arrangements. The album was self-produced outside Malmö and recorded in Gothenburg with longtime engineer Henrik Udd, with additional production from Drew Fulk and string arrangements by film composer Lukas Geppert.
The record follows 2024’s ‘The Black’ and arrives after an extensive touring period that saw Imminence perform sold-out shows across North America, South America, Australia, Japan and Europe.
Fans will get their first opportunity to experience the complete ‘Axis Mundi’ world in theaters before the album arrives everywhere on October 2.
