Soulfly brought out a special guest during their October 4 performance at Aftershock in Sacramento, California, with Jakobe Moreno stepping onto the stage to perform his father’s parts on “Pain.”
Jakobe is the son of Deftones vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno, who originally joined Soulfly in the studio for the track. “Pain” appeared on Soulfly’s sophomore album, ‘Primitive’, and was one of two songs that featured Chino during sessions around the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Both collaborations carried a personal connection to Dana Wells, the late stepson of Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera. Wells died in a 1996 car accident, and Chino reportedly became friends with Max through his relationship with Dana.
Jakobe has performed with several bands over the years, including Death Rogen, who have previously appeared at Aftershock.
The significance of Sunday’s performance was also highlighted by Gloria Cavalera, Max’s wife, who shared footage and reflected on the moment through social media.
“Today at the ‘Aftershock Festival’ Soulfly invited Jakobe Moreno, Chino Moreno from the Deftones’ son. He filled in on his dad’s part on the track Pain. Hot damn! What a voice! He rolled that track up perfectly. It was an epic moment!”
Gloria also recalled something Dana had said years ago about Jakobe eventually sharing a stage with Max’s son Zyon Cavalera, who currently plays drums for Soulfly.
“When Chino’s son was born, Dana told me someday he’s going to play with Zyon. And Dana was right because there was Zyon right behind Kobe on the drums. Legendary moment.”
The performance provided a striking connection between two generations of musicians tied together by Soulfly, Deftones and the longstanding friendship between their respective families.
