System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan isn’t just known for his work behind the kit in the Armenian-American nü-metal outfit — he’s also a longtime comic book aficionado and entrepreneur. Dolmayan runs Torpedo Comics in Las Vegas, NV, a shop that’s been featured on Pawn Stars, and he’s spent decades attending conventions, promoting the business, and even creating and launching his own comic books.
Over the weekend, Dolmayan shared a glimpse of what may be his most prized possession: a copy of 1938’s Action Comics #1, the historic first appearance of Superman. The book is one of the rarest in comic history — with only about 100 known copies still in existence today.
While an 8.5 graded copy of Action Comics #1 sold for $6 million at auction in April 2024, Dolmayan’s copy is slightly different. His features an 8.5 restored grade, meaning it has been carefully altered to return it to its former condition, which affects its auction value. Still, it remains a holy grail for collectors and likely came at a significant cost.
Speaking on Instagram about the acquisition, Dolmayan shared:
“I dreamed of owning this book for years. I know it’s just a materialistic possession but damn it makes me happy when I look at it.”
For Dolmayan, the comic represents a lifelong passion and a rare glimpse into a piece of pop culture history that has fascinated him for decades.
