Qeens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has opened up about the severity of the undisclosed medical emergency that sidelined the band during their 2024 tour. In a new interview with Consequence, the iconic vocalist/guitarist detailed the physical and mental toll it took on him, revealing that he spent seven months bedridden after undergoing emergency surgery last summer.

The band was forced to cancel their European tour in July 2024 due to Homme’s health issues—a concerning development given his previous cancer battle in 2022. Before stepping away from the road, Queens Of The Stone Age delivered a stripped-down performance in the Catacombs of Paris, which would later be released as “Alive In The Catacombs.”
Speaking about the set, Homme recalled:
“I was in a very difficult physical spot, and I’m really thankful that I was, actually. I couldn’t think about anything else but where we were. It’s better that I was unwell, because I think if I was well, we would’ve maybe been more ‘California’ about it and thought ‘Man, it’s so cool to be here…’ And something about that kind of sucks.”
But the real ordeal came immediately after:
“I performed in the Catacombs, and within about 20 hours I was being sedated and put under. Then I spent the next seven months in bed. I had a lot of time to think, you know? I was told I was gonna spend 18 months, two years there, so I was not excited.”
This brush with mortality, coupled with past traumas—including a 2011 near-death experience during knee surgery—has shaped Homme’s creative philosophy:
“Each thing that me and the guys are making, when we put that branding iron in the fire, I want to work on it and leave it in there until it’s red hot so I can at least, for the moment, try to beautifully scar everyone that hears it. I know other people use their brand for Vitamin Water and whatever the fuck they’re making. But I wanna burn you with mine. My brand is scarification.”
Following Homme’s recovery, Queens Of The Stone Age are back on the road with ‘The Catacombs Tour’, featuring support from Paris Jackson on select North American dates. The band is also performing at a string of major international festivals.
