Former Red Hot Chili Peppers and current Pearl Jam touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has avoided jail time following the fatal pedestrian crash he was involved in last year. Klinghoffer was formally charged with vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence in August 2024 after striking and killing 47-year-old Israel Sanchez in a marked crosswalk in Alhambra, CA, on March 18th, 2024.
Today, May 28th, court proceedings concluded with Klinghoffer entering a ‘no contest’ plea as part of a negotiated deal. Per Rolling Stone, the deal will see him sentenced to one year of informal probation, 60 days of community labor, completion of a driver safety course, and an order to pay restitution, the amount of which will be decided at a later date.
Ashley Sanchez, the daughter of the victim, addressed Klinghoffer in court with an emotional victim impact statement, stating he had caused “deep and lasting trauma” to her and her family.
Outside of the criminal proceedings, Klinghoffer is still facing a civil wrongful death lawsuit filed by Ashley. That suit, which has already seen several amendments, faced a setback earlier this year when a judge denied her attempt to pursue punitive damages—ruling that Klinghoffer’s actions did not meet the threshold of “willful and conscious disregard” for public safety.
A follow-up hearing in the civil case is currently scheduled for July 1st, 2025.
