Karnivool has dropped a brand-new track, “Opal,” from their long-awaited album In Verses, set to arrive on February 6th, 2026. The Australian progressive metal outfit continues to build anticipation with this release, following the debut of “Drone” and “Aozora” earlier this year.
The song’s creation is a bit of a journey through time, as guitarist Drew Goddard reveals the riff that forms the backbone of “Opal” was originally recorded during the Themata era—over two decades ago. “The riff in the middle and end was actually the first thing I recorded in the Themata era, on a computer at my parents’ house,” says Goddard. “Twenty years later, it found its place here. Jon dug it up, and we made it feel more current.” The verse starting with the line “You’ve been holding up…” was originally part of Asymmetry’s “Aeons,” but was left off the track at the time.
The band notes that the overall experience of putting “Opal” together was unlike anything they’d experienced before, with these older, distinct ideas falling into place in an entirely fresh way.
In Verses will be available through Cymatic Records/The Orchard, marking Karnivool’s return after a ten-year hiatus since their last album. Fans can now dive into the visualizer for “Opal” as a taste of what’s to come.
