Kid Rock has announced his upcoming faith-focused album ‘Halfway 2 Jesus’, a 17-track effort that will also feature a reunion with fellow Detroit artist Eminem.
The record is scheduled for release October 17 and follows the arrival of its first single, “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)”. The new material finds Kid Rock leaning heavily into Christian themes, with song titles including “Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus,” “Water Into Wine,” “Me And Jesus” and “God Is Good.”
The album’s religious focus represents a notable contrast with some of the more controversial material from Kid Rock‘s earlier career. Among the most frequently revisited examples is “Cool, Daddy Cool,” a 2001 song that appeared on the soundtrack to the children’s film ‘Osmosis Jones’. The track contains lyrics in which Rock references being attracted to underage girls, followed by his late collaborator Joe C. delivering a line describing that attraction as “mandatory.” The song resurfaced earlier this year amid renewed scrutiny of Rock’s past lyrics.
That history provides some additional context for the dramatically different lyrical territory explored on ‘Halfway 2 Jesus’, which includes songs directly addressing Jesus, God, faith and personal change.
The album will also feature Eminem on “7 Sins,” marking another collaboration between the two artists. The pair previously worked together earlier in their careers.
The lead single “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)” takes its title from the New Testament and serves as the first preview of the forthcoming record. Kid Rock dedicated the accompanying video to longtime Twisted Brown Tucker Band keyboardist Jimmie Bones, who is battling ALS, as well as Kalvin Lynch, a fan with an inoperable brain tumor whose Make-A-Wish was to play drums with Rock.
