Marcus King Reveals Why He Removed Brent Hinds From A 2025 Tour: “He Was Just Partying A Little Too Much”

Blues-rock guitarist and singer Marcus King has opened up about his friendship with the late Brent Hinds, revealing that he was ultimately forced to remove the guitarist from a 2025 tour due to increasingly disruptive behavior on the road.

Hinds, who passed away following a motorcycle accident last August, had remained active musically after his departure from Mastodon earlier in 2025. Following that split, he collaborated with King both in the studio and on tour, including a guest appearance on King’s track “Red Door.”

During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, King reflected on their friendship and recounted an incident that occurred while touring with Hinds’ psychobilly project Fiend Without A Face.

According to King, a backstage incident involving a member of the touring crew proved to be the final straw.

“I ended up having to kick him off the tour, which broke my heart, but he kind of forced my hand.”

King went on to describe finding a crew member in tears after an encounter with Hinds backstage, explaining that the situation escalated to a point where the rest of the touring party felt the arrangement was no longer workable.

Despite the incident, King spoke warmly of Hinds throughout the conversation, emphasizing the affection and respect he still had for the guitarist.

“He was just partying a little too much, you know? And I mean, I really loved that dude like a brother. I miss him. Miss him a lot.”

He continued by praising Hinds’ unique personality and artistic spirit:

“He was a true artist. He was insane.”

The discussion offered another glimpse into the larger-than-life reputation Hinds carried throughout his career, both as a founding member of Mastodon and through his many side projects and collaborations.

King’s comments come shortly after the release of “Red Door,” one of Hinds’ final studio recordings, which features a guest guitar performance from the late musician.
