MARILYN MANSON Performs in Mexico Amid Protests & Severed Cow Head, Supported by Local Governor

Marilyn Manson’s recent return to Mexico sparked controversy, but the shock rocker still took the stage at the Teatro del Pueblo in San Luis Potosí on August 10th, performing as part of the city’s annual state fair.

The free concert faced criticism from local religious and conservative groups, who opposed Manson’s involvement due to the family-friendly nature of the event and the singer’s controversial reputation. Reports indicate supporters of Manson also left a severed cow’s head in front of a local cathedral, seemingly in response to protest efforts.

Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona defended the performance, framing it as a “defense of freedom of expression” and a pushback against conservative mindsets that have long criticized hard rock in Mexico. He added:

“There will always be opposing voices, and Marilyn Manson has faced them not just in Mexico but in other parts of the world too. But if he’s already performed in Rome, the cradle of Catholicism, why couldn’t he perform in San Luis Potosi? This isn’t about religion; it’s about cultural justice, about creating unity, and we must do it through music.”

Manson’s return to Mexico comes after years of controversy surrounding allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which have continued to divide opinions since their emergence. While authorities opted not to pursue criminal charges, citing the statute of limitations and insufficient evidence, several civil suits and settlements with accusers have also marked his recent years.

Despite this, Manson relaunched his career in summer 2024 with new music and high-profile tours, following a multi-year absence that saw him dropped by his label, manager, and agent. While some UK tour dates were canceled amid local pressure, the San Luis Potosí performance went ahead without incident, drawing a substantial crowd.

Manson is scheduled to return to Mexico on December 6th to co-headline Knotfest Mexico in Monterrey with Falling In Reverse.
