Filmmaker and musician Matt Zane has announced that his unauthorized documentary centered on late Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray will move forward as a self-funded project, despite strong opposition from both estates.
The documentary, which Zane claims began filming years ago at the request of Static and Wray themselves, has faced public condemnation and legal resistance from the estates of the late couple. Late last year, Zane confirmed his intention to proceed with the project regardless, even after receiving a cease-and-desist notice.
An attempted Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign launched earlier this year failed to gain traction, raising roughly $400 from four backers before being shut down. In a statement released on January 21st, Zane confirmed he will now personally finance the project.
“I’m sure the estates and everyone over in the current STATIC-X camp thought that if they could prevent my funding, that would be the end of it,” Zane said. “I’m here to tell you I’ll move forward regardless and will self-fund this project to ensure that it’s made.”
Zane has faced accusations from segments of the fanbase suggesting the film is a “cash grab,” though he insists financial gain has never been his motivation — noting that by self-funding, all financial risk now rests solely on him.
“Wayne and Tera asked me to make this. They were my friends,” Zane explained. “They wanted their truth and their story out there, and they trusted me with all of their video projects. I won’t let them down.”
According to Zane, the film focuses on the final years of Static and Wray’s lives, a period he describes as marked by increasingly dangerous behavior. He has also expressed hope that the families involved will eventually view the completed project.
“I sincerely hope their families watch it,” he added. “I truly believe they will come to understand that my intention was always to honor Wayne and Tera’s wishes.”
Weekly updates on the documentary’s progress are expected to be shared via Zane’s Instagram account.
Zane, who previously worked in adult entertainment and later fronted Society 1, collaborated closely with Static during the final seven years of the musician’s life prior to his 2014 accidental overdose. Wray died by suicide in 2016.
In a recent interview with Screamer Magazine, Zane elaborated on the origins of the project, stating that the concept was discussed with Static and Wray prior to their deaths and that he was allegedly granted full creative control over a separate, non-band-focused film.
“I want to say the truth, first and foremost,” Zane said. “They agreed and gave me full creative control.”
Zane also claimed that his plans were openly discussed with members of Static-X and management before later legal action halted the project.
