Tallah and Code Orange drummer/multi-instrumentalist Max Portnoy is the latest musician to step into Drumeo’s popular “For The First Time” series, taking on a towering classic from legendary hard rock icons Led Zeppelin.
The newly released episode finds Portnoy attempting to learn and perform the band’s sprawling 1975 epic “In My Time Of Dying” after hearing it for the very first time without its original drum track. The challenge required him to craft his own performance over the 11-minute-plus song while navigating the massive shadow cast by late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.
Portnoy’s appearance also continues a family connection with Drumeo, as his father — acclaimed Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy — has appeared in several episodes for the platform over the years, including collaborative content alongside Max himself.
The episode showcases Portnoy dissecting the bluesy hard rock staple piece by piece before delivering his own interpretation of the percussion parts across the lengthy composition.
