Megadeth have officially released their long-anticipated cover of Metallica’s ‘Ride The Lightning’, closing out their newly released self-titled studio album with a full-circle nod to the band’s earliest roots.

The track appears as a bonus cut on Megadeth, marking a symbolic moment for founder Dave Mustaine, who originally co-wrote ‘Ride The Lightning’ before his departure from Metallica in 1983. Mustaine has previously described the decision to cover the song as a gesture of respect toward his former bandmates, Metallica vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich.

“It was about paying my respects and closing the circle,” Mustaine has said of the cover.

The timing is notable, as Mustaine has also made it clear that Megadeth are entering the final chapter of their career. The release of the album coincides with plans for a farewell tour expected to span the next three to five years, making the Metallica cover feel like a deliberate and reflective closing statement.
