Metallica pulled off a belated birthday prank on Kirk Hammett during the final moments of their set in Auckland, NZ on November 19th. The legendary thrash guitarist, who turned 63 the day before, was ambushed by the band’s crew and his bandmates before being blasted with silly string. As chaos unfolded, vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield led the crowd in a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
After collecting himself, Hammett addressed the audience, saying:
“They said they weren’t gonna do this. They said they weren’t gonna do this and they did it. Goddamnit, my friends, I love ’em. Thank you everyone.”
Given his history of onstage birthday chaos, Hammett likely saw it coming—his bandmates have made a tradition out of celebrating him in the most Metallica way possible.
