Multi-platinum alt-rock giants MUSE brought a heavier edge to their headlining set on night two (June 20th) of this year’s Hellfest Open Air in Clisson, France — and took time to honor some iconic influences along the way.
While performing their song “We Are Fucking Fucked”, the trio worked in a tribute to French progressive metal legends GOJIRA, blending in a portion of “Stranded” — a fitting homage given the home-country crowd. They also nodded to NIRVANA with a snippet of “Heart-Shaped Box” during the same performance.
The band didn’t stop there. Throughout their set, MUSE dropped in riffs and transitions from several heavy icons:
- “Stockholm Syndrome” featured elements of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE’s “Township Rebellion”
- “New Born” was laced with “Calm Like A Bomb”
- And “Kill Or Be Killed” took a detour into SLIPKNOT’s “Duality”
Fan-filmed footage of their GOJIRA tribute has surfaced online and showcases just how far MUSE have leaned into their heavy rock and metal roots for this current era.
With Hellfest known for its genre-defining lineups, MUSE’s willingness to cross boundaries — and pay respect while doing so — made their set one of the weekend’s most talked-about performances.
