Parkway Drive’s Jia O’Connor Apologizes For Past Lyrics As ABC Investigation Exposes Allegations In Byron Bay Hardcore Scene

An ABC investigation into alleged rape culture and sexual abuse in the early 2000s Byron Bay hardcore and metalcore scene has surfaced disturbing claims involving individuals connected to Parkway Drive and their wider orbit.

The report was prompted in part by the recent sentencing of Jed Gordon, a former employee of Parkway Drive and brother to drummer Ben Gordon, who pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse with a minor for incidents alleged to have occurred around 2002–2003. The victim, who was 15 at the time, has since publicly waived her right to anonymity and spoken out about the case.

According to the ABC investigation, additional women have now come forward with similar allegations involving Gordon during the same timeframe. One accuser, Siobhan Daysh, claimed Gordon was widely referred to as “Ped Gordon” within certain circles, stating:

“His preferences for very young girls were pretty well known.”

The report also references an alleged early 2000s business card attributed to Gordon identifying him as “tour manager / merch dude” for Parkway Drive, including a crude personal message.

Gordon’s lawyer told ABC in response to the additional allegations:

“they’re rubbing as far as I’m concerned.”

ABC also reports that New South Wales Police are understood to be investigating the wider claims.

As part of the same investigation, Parkway Drive bassist Jia O’Connor addressed resurfaced rap recordings made prior to joining the band in 2006, which contained highly misogynistic and disturbing lyrical content.

O’Connor issued an apology to ABC, stating the material was created during his teenage years while attempting to emulate other artists:

“Insecure teenagers” and aimed to emulate the hateful lyrics of Eminem and NWA without realising the consequences.

He also added:

“In fact, many songs were never meant to be published, but some of the worst songs were leaked and ended up hurting people. While it was a toxic culture for boys, it was so much worse for girls, and I am deeply sorry for contributing to that.”

Parkway Drive have since confirmed they distanced themselves from Gordon following the revelations, stating he was removed from their merch operations after learning of the allegations and criminal proceedings. The band also said they were unaware of his criminal history until it surfaced alongside court documentation.

The group have issued statements condemning Gordon’s actions, apologising to fans, and expressing support for the victim.
