Power Trip have officially returned with their first new music since the death of frontman Riley Gale, releasing two new tracks, “Precinct 3” and “Scavenger,” as the Texas crossover thrash outfit enters its next chapter with vocalist Seth Gilmore.
The songs made their initial debut on SiriusXM earlier this week before becoming available online on October 8. Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez co-produced both tracks alongside Jacob Hansen, whose credits include The Black Dahlia Murder and Volbeat. Hansen also handled mixing and mastering duties.
Drummer Chris Ulsh praised Hansen’s understanding of both modern production and the underground extreme metal scene, explaining that the band wanted the new material to sound current without losing the qualities that define Power Trip.
“Recording worked out really well for us because he has the knowledge of making these big records, but also comes from the late 80’s extreme metal underground. We’re tough to please because we want something that sounds current, but most importantly we want it to sound like us, however that comes out.”
Ibanez also explained that the writing process was shaped by thoughts of Gale and what the late vocalist might have wanted to explore lyrically.
“When we were writing this, we wondered what Riley would have wanted to write about. So once we decided on that approach, it honestly came really easily– the lyrics were flowing and it just felt like the right way to kick off this new chapter and honor him. I think he would have been stoked to see it come to fruition.”
The band also shared some insight into the subject matter behind “Scavenger.” Gilmore described the track as addressing people who build their own sense of importance through their association with others, only to exploit that connection or turn against the people who helped them.
“There are people out there that ride along and develop some sort of self-importance from association. And from there, they wield that in the wrong directions. Or maybe even against the same people they leeched it from.”
A music video for “Precinct 3”, directed by Eric Richter, whose previous work includes videos for Evanescence and Knocked Loose, is also available.
Power Trip signed with Blue Grape Music in March, several years after Gale’s death in 2020. The band eventually resumed touring with Gilmore, known for his work with Skourge, taking over vocal duties. While they have been back on the road for some time, these two tracks mark their first new studio material since returning.
More music is reportedly on the way, with Power Trip having begun work on new material more than a year ago and their next studio album expected to arrive in spring 2027.
Vinyl editions of “Precinct 3” and “Scavenger” are available through the band’s official website, with an exclusive variant also planned for Black Friday Record Store Day on November 27.
