After reviewing a staggering 6,200 auditions in their search for a new drummer, multi-platinum alternative metal act Primus have officially welcomed John Hoffman as their latest percussionist. Best known for his performances on YouTube and social media, Hoffman steps into the role previously held by Tim “Herb” Alexander, who departed the band last fall.
The competition was fierce, with Primus narrowing down the finalists to an impressive lineup of drummers who took part in in-person tryouts. Those who made it to the final round included:
- Rory Dolan (lespecial)
- Thomas Pridgen (Fever 333, ex-The Mars Volta, etc.)
- Mike Stone
- Stan Bicknell
- Sam Groverman (Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio)
- Nikki Glaspie (The Nth Power, Snarky Puppy, etc.)
- Gergo Borlai
- Thomas Lang (stOrk, etc.)
The band officially confirmed Hoffman’s addition today, February 7th, via the following announcement:
Check out Hoffman‘s audition videos below. Now that Primus is back at full strength, he’ll be hitting the road with the band this April for the ‘Sessanta V2.0 Tour’, alongside A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
This tour continues last year’s celebration of Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday, with members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, and Primus rotating in and out each night to perform each other’s songs.
Before that, Primus will take part in Tool‘s debut ‘Tool Live In The Sand’ festival in Punta Cana. For this special set, they’ve enlisted none other than Tool‘s own Danny Carey on drums.
