RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE’s Tom Morello Reflects On Iconic Debut Single “Killing In The Name”: “I Wish I Could Tell You It Was The Band’s Idea — It Wasn’t”

Rage Against The Machine’s explosive 1992 debut single “Killing In The Name” remains one of the most defiant protest songs in music history. Its blunt, expletive-laden message — tackling themes of white supremacy, police brutality, and systemic oppression — has transcended generations, recently crossing one billion streams earlier this year.

While it may seem like an obvious choice now, guitarist Tom Morello admits that leading with the incendiary track wasn’t the band’s idea at all. Speaking with George Stroumboulopoulos on The Strombo Show, Morello reflected on how their former A&R rep Michael Goldstone was the one who pushed for “Killing In The Name” to be their first single — and insisted it be sent to radio completely unedited.

Morello stated:

“We buried that song on our demo tape. It was song six on the Rage demo. And then the first time it came to the forefront was that Michael Goldstone, the A&R guy… He suggested that be the first single, with one caveat — that we do not edit any of the lyrics. Sixteen fuck-yous and one motherfucker. We’re not going to edit it, and we’re going to send that to the radio. I wish I could tell you it was the band’s idea. It was not.”

At the time, this was a bold move considering the PMRC’s war on explicit music was still in full swing. Rage would famously protest censorship not long after, appearing naked onstage with duct tape over their mouths at a 1993 Lollapalooza performance.

Morello also revealed that while Goldstone was instrumental in their early success, he initially pushed to cut out a key breakdown from the song — the tension-building pause before Zack de la Rocha’s explosive “Now you do what they told ya!”

“That was an important part! I remember Goldstone wanted us to take that part out. I think he heard ‘hit single,’ as long as it didn’t have that crazy part where it just stops a lot! We felt pretty confident that needed to stay in the song, and I think history has borne that out.”

Thanks in part to that steadfast defiance, Rage Against The Machine’s self-titled debut remains one of the most important records in heavy music history — and “Killing In The Name” continues to echo through protests, playlists, and stadiums over 30 years later.
