Swedish post-hardcore legends Refused have launched a crowdfunding campaign for their upcoming documentary, ‘Exit To End’, which chronicles the band’s three-decade career as they prepare to officially end their reunion that began in 2014.
The documentary follows Refused on their global farewell tour, culminating in a trio of hometown shows in Umeå, Sweden, with the final performance livestreamed on December 21st. While members will continue collaborating in side projects like Backengrillen, Refused as fans know them will be officially retiring.
According to a press release, Exit To End traces the band’s journey from “a damp basement in Umeå’s Teg suburb to the world’s biggest stages,” highlighting their music, politics, and influence on society. The film explores Sweden’s cultural landscape during the 1990s, including youth rebellion, veganism, antifascism, and the unique hardcore movement, while focusing on the creative partnership of singer Dennis Lyxzén and drummer David Sandström.
Director Anders Balsam Hellström (A Heart Is Always Red) described the project as:
“‘Exit To End‘ is more than a music documentary. It’s a story about the cost of idealism, about friendship and reconciliation – and about a small town that became world-famous for something no one could have predicted.”
Fans can support the project via Kickstarter, where a sneak peek of the documentary is available. As of press time, the campaign has raised $1,850 toward its $23,282 USD goal.
